A graduate of Cornell Law School (’94) and Stanford University (’89) where he was a world-ranked swimmer and member of 2 NCAA championship teams, Richard is an experienced film producer, entertainment attorney and entrepreneur with a decade of legal and business experience representing independent film producers & production companies, writers, actors, directors and musicians. Richard currently manages the Independent Law Group, a boutique entertainment law firm he founded in 2001 and has been integrally involved as an attorney on a variety of successful short and long format independent film projects that have enjoyed successful festival tours and distribution, including David Brooks’ MEMBER starring Josh Hartnett, Pat Healy's MULLITT (both of which premiered at Sundance in 2001) and Wayne Kramer’s THE COOLER in 2003.
Most recently, Roll has served as a creative producer and/or production counsel on five independent features in 2003 & 2004, all currently enjoying success on the festival circuit, including: BLACK CLOUD, a Native American “Rocky” written and directed by veteran television actor Rick Schroder, starring Tim McGraw and Eddie Spears; SEE THIS MOVIE, executive produced by Academy Award nominated writer-directors Chris and Paul Weitz (ABOUT A BOY, IN GOOD COMPANY); starring Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers, Jim Piddock and John Cho; A COAT OF SNOW, Gordy Hoffman’s directorial debut (Sundance Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award Winner 2001 for LOVE LIZA); LOOKING FOR KITTY, written and directed by Sundance alum Ed Burns (BROTHERS MCMULLEN), starring Burns and David Krumholtz; and SAY UNCLE, by writer-director Peter Paige (“Queer As Folk”), starring Paige, Kathy Najimy, Melanie Lynskey, Gabrielle Union and Anthony Clark.
DOWN DOG marks Rolls debut as a writer / director. Roll will use the short film to facilitate the set up and production as director of the feature film version of DOWN DOG which he also wrote with his wife and creative collaborator Julie Piatt.

Julie is a true modern renaissance woman. A fashion, interiors and furniture designer; a painter; a sculptor; a yogi; a healer; a writer and a mother, DOWN DOG is Julie’s first foray into screenwriting and film production. Inspired by her experiences as a long-time member of the Los Angeles yoga community, DOWN DOG is the unique expression of Julie’s original idea and characters. She is Richard’s writing partner on both the short film and the feature film screenplay of the same name.
In addition to writing duties, Julie also deftly handled executive producer duties, inspiring and managing the aesthetic look and feel of the film, the yoga choreography, costuming and spiritual “realism” that imbues the film with a superlative sense of universal actuality and appeal.
In addition to screenwriting, Julie currently manages Jai Lifestyle, a multi-faceted company that uniquely synergizes modern interior design services with yoga and spiritual programs, including yoga classes, international five-star yoga retreats and non-denominational spiritual programs.
Julie is responsible for not only co-writing DOWN DOG but for ensuring the film’s authenticity and allegiance to its subject matter that derives from her own life experiences as a longtime member of the Los Angeles yoga and spiritual communities.
